Nintendo’s first-ever commercial to be aired during a Super Bowl has been released, and it all revolves around one very important thing. The upcoming Nintendo Switch takes front and center in the ad which, predictably, uses The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild to show off what the console is capable of.
Not that we blame the Big N for opting to go with its flagship franchise to sell the Switch to the masses – Link’s face is one that’s familiar to a great number of people and considering the huge audience that tunes in to watch the sporting event, it seems like a no-brainer. With that said, a second, more lengthy ad (below) has also been released to the public, which shows off a far greater number of launch and future titles, including Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, ARMS, Splatoon 2 and 1-2-Switch.
After the commercial failure of the Wii U, Nintendo will need to ensure that the Switch manages to recapture the audiences and fans that it lost with its predecessor, a goal that may already be beyond reach, considering the fair amount of criticism its sparse launch lineup has received. Make no mistake, Breath of the Wild will prove to be a system seller for the hybrid device, but if Nintendo fails to follow that up with additional first-party support, it could well be in danger of following suit with the Wii U.
We already know that a brand new title featuring everyone’s favorite plumber – Super Mario Odyssey – is on the cards for Nintendo Switch later this year, but will that be enough? It’s too early to tell, but let’s hope Nintendo has some big news to share during this year’s E3.
