Slowly but surely, Sony Online Entertainment is bringing its MMO shooter PlanetSide 2 to consoles, after the company announced plans to hold a closed beta on PlayStation 4 on January 20.

Currently limited to those in the States, the bout of testing will allow the studio to monitor performance levels across the title as well as stress test the game’s servers. In terms of when those in Europe can expect the beta, Clint Worley explained via PlayStation Blog that the early build has been “slightly delayed” in the territory.

“We are working on our [Sony Computer Entertainment Europe] beta submission. It will be slightly delayed but it is on its way. Once we have a confirmed date we will let our SCEE players know. I would still recommend signing up for the beta via our webpage just to be sure.”

Whether you’re about to dip in to PlanetSide 2 for the first time or you’d had experience with the PC version, you’re probably well aware of the massive scope within SOE’s title. With servers able to support up to 2,000 players that do battle across land and air, there’s no doubting the MMO’s ambition, and it’ll be interesting to see how its fate pans out in the console space.

Mind you, it’s worth keeping in mind that the player count within the game rarely reaches those lofty heights, though one eagle-eyed user stumbled across a battle that encompasses no less than 576 players — yikes! Unfortunately, PlanetSide 2 will not support cross-platform play between PC and PS4, though the studio has assured fans that it is targeting 1080p and 60 frames per second in the final build.
