Precursor Games has announced that Shadow of the Eternals, the self-proclaimed spiritual successor to Eternal Darkness, is officially no longer in development.

Denis Dyack, Precursor’s chief creative officer, made the announcement in a post on the company’s forums, which reads in part:

“It is with a heavy heart that we have decided to put the Shadow of the Eternals project on hold. We are very happy with what we have accomplished both as a group and with the community. The community has blown us away and was the one thing that kept us going through it all – we cannot thank you enough.”

“Many of us will be taking a break. For those who are not aware, we all worked on this project as a labor of love and self financed 100% of everything for a over a year to try to make Shadow of the Eternals a reality. Although we did not succeed on doing this, we succeeded in making many friends and starting something that we hope provided value for those involved. We have no regrets…”

Precursor Games has struggled with funding Shadow of the Eternals ever since the project was announced last May. Concerns over Denis Dyack’s involvement with the studio brought an early end to the original crowdfunding efforts last June, and the arrest of Ken McCullock (a long-time Silicon Knights employee and the main writer on Eternal Darkness) on child pornography charges further damaged the studio prior to the launch of the last Kickstarter campaign.

Fans of Shadow of the Eternals can take some comfort in the fact that the project is not completely dead, but only “on hold.” Dyack noted that it “needs a rest too,” but could come back when the entire studio agrees that “the time is right [to] get together and start it up again.”
