If you’ve got a spare $400 this holiday season, PlayStation VR gets our vote as the best of the bunch. And since it’s also the cheapest of the three at $349, pick up Batman Arkham VR, or Rez Infinite, too, and strap in for hours of fun with a device that’s offering a real point of difference.

Sure, if you’ve not jumped into the console space yet and you’re in the market for a console, then, by all means, the PS4 Pro is the go-to option. For current PlayStation owners, though, the upgrade just isn’t necessary yet and you’d be far better off investing your money in PSVR.

Undoubtedly, PSVR is the shake up that gaming needed, giving licence for some much needed innovation in the industry. It’s offering a unique and different sort of gaming experience beyond incremental upgrades to performance, as with Pro or HDR televisions. Hardcore gamers will appreciate learning new skills and engaging with their favorite media in innovative ways. Casual gamers, meanwhile, will be stunned by the immersion of the experience.

VR is a complete reprogramming of everything we know about video games, the sort technology that produces “oos” and “ahs” in the same way the advent of 3D graphics did two decades ago. Ok, the games aren’t quite there yet, but the fun factor is, and there was always a sense that VR would be a long burn, not an instant smash hit. Yet even in its current guise, PlayStation VR is well worth the money.
