Get yourselves ready for another crossover beat ’em up extravaganza, as it looks like Capcom’s gearing up to reveal Marvel vs. Capcom 4 as soon as this weekend. According to a report by Polygon and corroborated by Eurogamer, multiple sources have indicated to both that the next entry in the fighting game series will be officially announced at this weekend’s PlayStation Experience event, with a release date set for sometime in 2017.
As an aside, Street Fighter V‘s year-end competitive tournament – Capcom Cup 2016 – will be held at the exhibition, so we already know Capcom will have a strong presence there. If the follow-up to 2011’s Marvel Vs. Capcom 3 is to be announced in just a matter of days, we can’t imagine a better time or place.
[zergpaid]If Polygon’s sources are anything to go by, Marvel vs. Capcom 4 could see the biggest shake-up to the series yet, with heavy emphasis being placed on characters from Marvel’s cinematic universe. Among other things, the result of such a direction would mean a drastically reduced presence of X-Men staples like Magneto, Wolverine and Sentinel, replaced instead with the likes of Ant-Man, Black Panther and perhaps even some from popular Netflix series’ Luke Cage and Jessica Jones.
Since the release of Marvel vs. Capcom 3, there’s been nary a word on the potential of a sequel, Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 being the most recent – a re-release that included 12 new characters, as well as changes to existing ones. Of course, none of this is official as of yet, but all eyes will surely be on Capcom come December 3.
We’ll be covering all of the news that trickles out of the event as and when it comes, so be sure to check back this weekend.
