Ubisoft’s E3 press conference came to close with the news of a brand new entry in the Ghost Recon franchise. The first console Ghost Recon game since 2012’s middling Future Soldier, Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Wildlands introduced itself with an impressive reveal trailer that mixed CG story beats with pre-alpha gameplay footage.
Set in the Bolivian countryside of the not-too-distant future, the game will put the player in the role of a US Special Forces Ghost who’s been sent into country to combat the malevolent Santa Blanca drug cartel. The third person shooter (which switches to first person when aiming down sights) offers multiple ways to achieve your goals. Stealth tech, vehicles, drones, and heavy weapons are all at your disposal, as is the tagging feature found in Far Cry and Splinter Cell.
Talk of unleashed chaos and parachute inserts into the game’s open world make Just Cause seem like a major source of influence, but mention of getting your enemies to “wipe each other out” might suggest the game will feature a mechanic similar to Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor’s celebrated Nemesis system.
With a wide range of environments to explore with up to four players in co-op, Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Wildlands should offer plenty of variety to players when it releases for PS4, Xbox One, and PC. What its release window is remains a mystery, but the impressive trailer above will whet your appetite in the meantime.
