Director of the Super Smash Bros. series, Masahiro Sakurai, has all but confirmed that DLC support for both the Wii U and 3DS versions of the popular brawler is coming to a close sooner rather than later.

According to excerpts of an interview obtained by IGN (translated by SourceGaming), Sakurai was quizzed on the future of the series in the book Making of Fire Emblem: 25 Years of Development Secrets, where he revealed the sad – but expected – news, saying: “Well, DLC is coming to an end soon, too, you know?”

For those that gobble up every last drop of news in the gaming world on a daily basis though, Sakurai’s statements are to be expected – just last week, Nintendo announced that tomorrow’s Nintendo Direct show will be the last to focus specifically on the all-star beat ’em up. Many expect the Big N to reveal the final details on possibly the game’s last DLC character, Cloud Strife as part of the event, along with a few potential surprises.

Besides that, Sakurai was also asked if he intends to ever work on any Smash Bros. sequels, to which he answered, “It’s pretty difficult. If I keep making Smash, I get to work on interesting things like Ryu, but if I leave, I don’t know if the staff could do it by themselves.”

Who knows who’s hands the future of the franchise will be left in, but for now, we should all be prepared to give the current games a proper send off.
