The Evil Within And Rage Both Sold Enough To Justify Sequels, Says Bethesda

Both Tango Gameworks' The Evil Within and id Software's Rage sold enough copies to warrant sequels, publisher Bethesda has revealed. During an interview with Finder.com.au (via Destructoid) during this year's QuakeCon, Bethesda vice president Pete Hines was asked whether both games were successful enough to secure follow-ups in the future, to which Hines responded with "I do think both The Evil Within and Rage did well enough that we could make sequels."

Both Tango Gameworks’ The Evil Within and id Software’s Rage sold enough copies to warrant sequels, publisher Bethesda has revealed. During an interview with Finder.com.au (via Destructoid) during this year’s QuakeCon, Bethesda vice president Pete Hines was asked whether both games were successful enough to secure follow-ups in the future, to which Hines responded, “I do think both The Evil Within and Rage did well enough that we could make sequels.”

For the uninitiated, The Evil Within launched back in 2014, and was directed by legendary Resident Evil creator Shinji Mikami, while Rage was the result of id Software trying to do something different by splicing the first-person shooter with driving and a splash of RPG mechanics.

Hines continues to emphasize that a sequel for either game has yet to be confirmed, and while both are possible, fans will “have to wait and see” what projects Bethesda has “in the pipeline” for the future.

I can’t talk about the unannounced stuff and what we may or may not do. I get myself in trouble whenever I do that. Even when we were talking about the Morrowind Remaster, if I come out and say, ‘I just don’t think that is going to happen,’ then people freak out. So I won’t confirm or deny stuff we may or may not do, as people jump to the wrong conclusions. But I do think both The Evil Within and Rage did well enough that we could make sequels. Personally I loved Rage and had a tonne of fun playing it, but we have a lot of stuff in the pipeline right now so you will have to wait and see.

Tell us, what are your thoughts on the potential existence of a sequel for either title? The Evil Within and Rage, while not considered genre-defining, both received a largely positive critical reception when they originally hit retail, so we imagine that there’s an audience out there for both franchises.
