SEGA Teases New Sonic The Hedgehog Game Announcement

Considering 2016 marks the 25th anniversary of the Sonic The Hedgehog series, SEGA has been remarkably coy about celebrating the Blue Blur's special milestone. Indeed, unlike another big gaming-related anniversary being celebrated in new ways almost constantly, we've barely heard a peep from Sonic Team regarding any potential Birthday bash, which no doubt is starting to concern fans.

Considering 2016 marks the 25th anniversary of the Sonic The Hedgehog series, SEGA has been remarkably coy about celebrating the Blue Blur’s special milestone. Indeed, unlike another big gaming-related anniversary being celebrated in new ways almost constantly, we’ve barely heard a peep from Sonic Team regarding any potential Birthday bash, which no doubt is starting to concern fans.

The official Sonic The Hedgehog Twitter page, however, seems to be having a blast with all the secrecy. A Tweet posted earlier today has taken a cheeky jab at fan criticisms that no new Sonic game has been announced since the frequently delayed Sonic Boom: Fire & Ice, which was originally due out last year. Judging by the final panel in the Tweet though, it seems that an unannounced game is very much in development, with the caption reading: “we solemnly swear we’re up to something good.”

That’s all you’re getting in terms of concrete details for now though, by the looks of it. The last time SEGA celebrated an anniversary for their mascot (20th), the publisher released Sonic Generations, an excellent dose of nostalgia that remade various stages from past games with a classic and modern version for each.

While a Sonic Generations 2 may be unlikely, we’re hoping that something similar is in the works behind closed doors that goes back to basics rather than relying on gimmicks to attract audiences.
