There’s a certain, unmeasurable, level of patience expected of gamers when it comes to upcoming releases that harbor a great deal of anticipation and expectation. Final Fantasy VII Remake is one such title that is shouldering such a burden right now, and despite Square Enix being well aware, they’re seemingly not ready to share any more than they already have for Cloud’s return.
As part of its celebration of the wider series’ 30th anniversary this week, the company declined to show any new gameplay footage of the remake, instead providing a lone piece of key art depicting Midgar with Cloud in the foreground. You can check out the image for yourselves below, which also features a shadowy rendition of Sephiroth looming over the doomed city.
Considering the occasion, and the fact that 2017 marks the 20th anniversary of the original game’s release, it’s hardly surprising that fans expected more than just a single image to whet their appetites for the remake, but the outcome is expected, nonetheless. Last month, Final Fantasy VII Remake and Kingdom Hearts III director Tetsuya Nomura told Japanese mag Famitsu Weekly that both titles still had a “way to go” before talk of release dates could take place, suggesting that fans could still have an agonizingly long wait ahead of them.
But that’s enough disappointment for one day. Square did make some big announcements during the celebrations, including providing a release date for Final Fantasy XV‘s first sizeable chunk of story DLC. Episode Gladio will be available to download from March 28 on Xbox One and PlayStation 4, and will focus on Gladiolus’ encounter with series villain Gilgamesh. Additionally, Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age was locked in for a July 11 release in North America.
As for Final Fantasy VII Remake, it remains in development without even a tentative release date.
