While Electronic Arts didn’t divulge specific sales figures, the publisher has announced that Star Wars Battlefront now stands as the biggest launch of any Star Wars game in history.
That’s thanks in large part to the shooter’s stellar digital performance, with EA noting that Battlefront also nabbed the record for the company’s “largest digital launch” buoyed by strong sales across PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC.
Revealed via the company’s official blog, EA Studios executive Patrick Soderlund touched upon the game’s record-breaking success, all the while teasing future plans for free DLC. That all kicks off next week with the Battle of Jakku. Acting as a tie-in to The Force Awakens in many ways, the expansion will herald a new 40-player game mode in the form of Turning Point.
In two weeks, The Battle of Jakku launches. Taking place 29 years before the events of Star Wars™: The Force Awakens™, The Battle of Jakku is a free DLC pack* that adds two new maps (including one for popular modes like Walker Assault and Supremacy) and a new mode to the game. The coolest thing is that it’s the only place you’ll be able to experience the pivotal events that help shape the look of one of the next iconic planets in the Star Wars universe. We can’t wait for you to step onto Jakku for the first time with us.
Indeed, a lack of content has fast become the subject of the recurring criticisms levelled at Star Wars Battlefront, though Soderlund assured fans that “lots of new content” lies on the horizon. Per EA’s blog: “Best of all, this is just the beginning. We have lots of new content coming over the next several months that will provide new ways to immerse yourself in Star Wars.”
Star Wars Battlefront will receive its first batch of free DLC next week with Battle of Jakku. It’ll go live for those who pre-ordered DICE’s licensed title first on December 1, before opening up to all users the following week on December 8.
