After an untimely leak sent speculation into overdrive earlier today, Warner Bros. has put the rumors to bed by unveiling LEGO Dimensions, a new installment in the popular video game franchise that will bring together characters from The Lord of the Rings, Batman and Back to the Future.
Due to hit stores on September 27, the crossover is essentially a merging of universes, with the publisher hinting that it plans to introduce new worlds and characters post-release. Built around similar NFC technology found in the likes of Skylanders and Nintendo’s Amiibo figurines, Dimensions will come packing a LEGO toy pad, allowing players to set their collectibles on the platform to transport saved data into the game itself.
WB Interactive is by no means the first to capitalize on such a popular market, but given the array of IP at its disposal, there’s every chance that Dimensions could grow into a stalwart and bankable franchise for the publisher moving forward. Besides, who would pass up an experience that includes Gandalf, Batman and Wyldstyle from The LEGO Movie in the same game?
Warner Bros. has slated LEGO Dimensions for release on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, Xbox One, Xbox 360 and Wii U on September 27. Retailers have begun taking pre-orders for the bundle, with the price point for a starter pack hovering around $99.99 at the time of writing.
For the first time in any LEGO videogame, characters from iconic entertainment franchises join forces and battle in worlds outside of their own. In addition to the game, the LEGO Dimensions Starter Pack will include the LEGO Toy Pad, which allows players to transport special LEGO minifigures and other LEGO objects into the game, bricks to build the LEGO Gateway, three LEGO Minifigures, including LEGO BatmanTM from DC Comics, LEGO Gandalf from The Lord of the Rings and Wyldstyle from The LEGO Movie, plus the LEGO BatmobileTM.
