While we have had a handful of games based around World War II, the first World War has often been forgotten about. Most of this may have to due with the nature of how battles were fought back then, but historical revisionism has never stopped a game before. Leave it to the creative team at Ubisoft Montpellier, though, to re-imagine the Great War for a whole new audience with Valiant Hearts: The Great War.
Featuring a tale of “crossed destinies and broken love in a world torn apart by war,” Valiant Hearts centers around four different characters drawn together by the battles and difficulties of the war. Together with their loyal canine companion, this band of disparate personalities must help each other deal with the pain and grief brought on by the horrors of war if they want to make it out with their humanity still in tact.
Powered by the UbiArt Framework engine that helped give Rayman Origins and Rayman Legends their stunning look, Valiant Hearts features a unique comic book visual style. And although this is a title set during wartime, that doesn’t mean that there won’t be splashes of color throughout the tale, as lush green forests and barren snow covered fields offer up a refreshing change of scenery.
Ubisoft already had me interested when they said that their Montpellier team was working on Valiant Hearts, as that studio has more than earned my trust at this point, but it’s the unique take on World War I that has me most excited here. It’s not often that a studio focuses on this specific war, as well as the emotional toll and trauma that it had on the people who took part in it.
Valiant Hearts: The Great War is scheduled to be released on June 25th for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and Windows PC, and it will carry a cost of $14.99.
