Not content with having millions of gamers dance every year, Ubisoft now wants players to sing. The French publisher’s first foray into karaoke is Just Sing, a spinoff of Just Dance which will release on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One on September 6. The game is not being internally developed at Ubisoft (after all, almost every studio they own are working on Assassin’s Creed in some capacity) and will instead be handled by veteran game studio iNiS. The Japanese developer gained critical acclaim due to its work on the Ouendan series for Nintendo DS and their Xbox-exclusive karaoke series Lips.
Just Sing will feature a tracklist of over 40 songs. These include “Take On Me” by A-Ha, The Weeknd’s “I Can’t Feel My Face” off of his hit album Beauty Behind The Madness, and “Drag Me Down” by One Direction. Similar to Just Dance, players will also be able to use their phones as a controller for Just Sing. To use their phones as a controller, iOS or Android owners will have to download a free app.
Singing is just one aspect of the experience, though, as players will also be able to record video of them performing if they want to. Just Sing will support both the PlayStation Camera and Kinect on their respective platforms, and will also allow players to use their phone’s camera. This video will be shown on their TV while they play, and can even be customized through the use of Instagram-style filters. Check out the trailer above to see it in action.
Just Dance has proved to be a big hit for Ubisoft, so it makes a lot of sense that they would move further into this casual direction. Only time will see if Just Sing will be as big a sensation as Just Dance, but the mega publisher will certainly put its best marketing effort behind it in order for it to succeed.
