PC gamers looking to explore dangerous caves can get excited as indie hit Spelunky will be re-launching on August 8th on both Steam and GOG.com. This cave crawler is a prime example of a roguelike game. In it, players explore areas filled with a variety of monsters, traps and treasures. Death is permanent – meaning that once your character bites it, you have to restart the entire game. To keep things interesting, the maps are completely randomly generated and filled with secret areas so each playthrough will feel entirely unique.

Like many other roguelike titles, Spelunky is well known for its notorious difficulty with a large number of traps and enemies that can instantly kill you. Back in 2009, I played the original PC version for quite some time and never even came close to getting to the end.

The new PC version of Spelunky will feature nine playable characters along with both co-operative and death match multiplayer for up to four players. Luckily for non-PC and Xbox owners, a Playstation 3 and Vita version are also in the works with plans to be released sometime later this summer.

We’ll keep you posted when we hear more.
