As part of THQ’s bankruptcy filing earlier this week the company disclosed a chart containing all their announced and unannounced projects. Noticeably absent from the list was any mention of Vigil’s Warhammer 40,000: Dark Millennium, which has raised questions about the current state of the game’s development.
The last time THQ made any official mention of the Warhammer title was last March when the publisher announced in a press release that they were no longer developing the game as an MMO. At the time CEO Brian Farrell stated:
“As previously announced, we have been actively looking for a business partner for the game as an MMO. However, based on changing market dynamics and the additional investment required to complete the game as an MMO, we believe the right direction for us is to shift the title from an MMO to a premium experience with single and multiplayer gameplay, robust digital content and community features,”
Kotaku contacted THQ this week to ask if Warhammer 40,000: Dark Millennium was still in production. What followed was a bizarre back and forth email conversation with the publisher’s PR team, that ultimately resulted in the following statement about the game’s status.
THQ PR: “Development of the DMO [Dark Millennium Online] ceased, and beyond that we haven’t provided any updates on the status of the game or made any announcements of Vigil’s next project(s). We don’t have anything more to share at this point… I’m saying we have made any announcements about what the resulting game would be, if any. There’s nothing to share until Vigil is ready to announce its next project.”
With THQ’s PR unable to confirm the game’s ultimate fate and Vigil currently working on a project titled Crawler, it seems unlikely that any version of Warhammer 40,000: Dark Millennium is still in development.
We will let you know if THQ ever clears up the confusion, but don’t hold your breath for a positive outcome.
