NeoGAF poster (and new Wii U owner) “Trike” accidentally found an operating system loophole on his console that allowed him to access the console’s Miiverse debug interface. Nintendo has since shut down the exploit, and is claiming that the interface was nothing more than a left over prototype.
Trike found the Wii U‘s Miiverse debug menu when he hit the “X” button while over the network’s exit button. Once on the inside he took several pictures and documented all of his findings on NeoGAF, which included; admin lists, forum posts, developer posts, messages, and email addresses.
The most interesting discovery was a list of internal messages from developers and Nintendo staffers that included several unannounced Wii U games/franchises. Metal Gear Solid and “resident evils” were both mentioned in the list, alongside the titles Yoshi’s Land Wii U and Soul Hackers.
Once Nintendo closed the loophole, they issued the following statement to GamesIndustry:
“It has come to our attention that some people were able to access a mock up menu on Miiverse following the launch of Wii U in the US… Please note that this was only a mock up menu and has now been removed and is not accessible.”
Nintendo’s claim that the Miiverse menu was a “mock up” means that there is some doubt as to if the unannounced Wii U games Yoshi’s Land Wii U and Soul Hackers exist. We will let you know if any further information develops on either title, however, this will likely remain a mystery until the games either get announced or are never released.
