2K Sports’ WWE 2K14 is arriving soon on current and next-gen consoles, and to kick off their debut in the squared circle the studio will be releasing a special “Phenom Edition” of the wrestling title.
The Phenom Edition will be focused on one of the WWE’s most legendary and longest termed wrestlers, The Undertaker. The package comes in a collectible tin coffin and includes the following; a card signed by The Undertaker, a controller skin, disc one of The Streak DVD that goes into his undefeated streak at WrestleMania, the WWE 2K14 game itself and a playable version of The Undertaker’s “American Badass” persona.
As a fan of The Undertaker, I should be all over the Phenom Edition of WWE 2K14, but I’m more interested in how Visual Concepts will handle the WWE series. There is no doubt that they are a well seasoned studio with some heavy titles under their belt, but they have never touched a wrestling game. It will surely be an interesting first attempt for Visual Concepts, even if it is just another ride in the rodeo for the Yukes company. Mind you, Visual Concepts surely won’t drop the ball any harder than EA did when they got the WCW license before THQ began doing WWF/E games.
With the “American Badass” Undertaker, this particular playable version just doesn’t come off as a big motivator for me to buy this version, although the coffin case is cool. That aside, it is The Undertaker. You couldn’t do a better special edition unless it was a “Stone Cold” Steve Austin (which has already been done) or a Sycho Sid (which should be done).
In addition to the Phenom Edition, players can also get Ultimate Warrior Edition (which I’m stoked about).
The Phenom Edition is available for pre-order through Amazon and the WWE Shop for $100. WWE 2K14 will hit Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 on October 29.
