Today’s a great day to be an amiibo fan, because not only has Nintendo announced new figures based on its potentially great new IP, Splatoon, but also fantastic-looking Yarn Yoshi amiibo that will be made out of actual yarn. That is, in addition to a new wave of Super Smash Bros. amiibo.
Here’s a quick note on what to expect, and when to expect it:
Launching alongside Splatoon on May 29th, will be Inkling Boy, Inkling Girl and Inkling Squid amiibo. By purchasing and tapping one of these on your GamePad while playing the game, you’ll unlock ‘special missions,’ which will allow you to unlock weapons and gear.
Also on May 29, a new set of amiibo in the Super Smash Bros. series will launch, featuring Charizard, PAC-MAN, Wario, Jigglypuff, Greninja, Robin, Lucina and Ness. July brings Dark Pit and Palutena. And in September, Zero Suit Samus, Ganondorf, Olimar, Dr. Mario and Bowser Jr. will join the amiibo family.
A new set of Yoshi amiibo figures made of actual yarn will launch later this fall along with the Yoshi’s Woolly World game. Tapping one of these yarn amiibo to the Wii U GamePad controller while playing Yoshi’s Woolly World will make another Yoshi appear in the game to assist the player. The Yarn Yoshi amiibo will be available in three colours: green, pink and light blue.
Although what I played of Splatoon at E3 has me incredibly excited about the game’s impending release, I’ve yet to really get into collecting amiibo. That said, the idea of characters made out of yarn has me pretty damned excited about these Yoshi’s Wolly World figures.
