The Mummy
Budget: $125–195 million
Domestic gross: $80.1 million
Worldwide gross: $407.8 million
Looking to get in on some Marvel and DC action, Universal had big hopes for their Dark Universe franchise that would blend their classic horror monsters together. With The Mummy, a reboot of a movie series that made big bucks in its last incarnation, the studio must have thought they could put their feet up and watch the money come rolling in. Especially as it featured one of the biggest stars in the world: Tom Cruise.
Well, they thought wrong, as the pic only pulled in $80.1 million on home turf. As with Transformers though, the overseas gross has bumped up the total box office to something slightly more acceptable. On the surface, at least. We know that with promotional costs added on, the movie’s complete budget was closer to $345 million, which means its $400 million total hardly breaks even.
The failure of The Mummy could be one of the most destructive box office bombs of the summer, as it might just result in Universal’s Dark Universe plans getting ripped up. Although with talents like Johnny Depp, Javier Bardem and possibly Angelina Jolie lined up to star in future films, you can bet they won’t abandon the franchise altogether.
