10) Some Days You Just Can’t Get Rid Of A Bomb – Batman: The Movie
Nowadays, we’re so used to the image of Batman as a dark figure that many fans can’t stand the campy, kitschy tones of the classic Batman TV series from the 1960s. What you have to remember, however, is that – unlike Joel Schumacher’s movies, which are just plain bad – the series deliberately set out to be a self-parody of the superhero genre. When the spinoff film Batman: The Movie arrived in 1966, then, it was aiming to produce laughs rather than awesome action and drama.
And it totally succeeded. Of the many laughs to be found in it, The Movie has at least two standout hilarious sequences. The first is the deliberately poorly done ‘shark attack’ scene (“Quick, Robin, get me the Anti-Shark Bat-Spray!”) and the second is the brilliant skit where Batman has to dispose of a bomb – but keeps encountering innocent bystanders, a group of nuns and even some cute little duckies.
The comedy is laid on so thick here that the scene would be totally at home in, say, a Naked Gun movie. Yes, we prefer it when Batman films bring the drama, but the character can bring the humor just as well. Just ask LEGO Batman.
