Cinematical premiered the new illustrated movie poster for Takashi Miike’s 13 Assassins, along with a glowing recommendation for the old-school samurai action flick. Available on VOD on March 24th, this Magnet Releasing sword-play gem will have a theatrical release on April 29th. Again, for those lucky enough to be in Austin in the next week, 13 Assassins is screening at the uber popular SXSW film festival.
Miike is well known among cinephiles for his extensive resume of films and a flair for dark and twisted violence (think Audition and Ichi the Killer). This straight-up samurai action film should feel old-school, if the buzz is accurate. Thirteen brave samurai assassins, led by noble samurai Shimada, attempt an ambush to destroy the evil and sadistic Lord Naritsugu. When Naritsugo arrives at the appointed village of ambush, the brave samurai realize they are vastly outnumbered by Naritsugu’s. In what looks to be a hopeless situation, the 13 assassins struggle against evil in an epic battle.
Make sure to check back next week as I’ll have an exclusive interview with Takashi Miike and a review of the film.
