3) The Purge Expands Internationally
Here’s something James DeMonaco mentioned already discussing with a producer – an international Purge. What if another country – let’s say Germany – sees how economically viable and criminally “responsible” a Purge is, so they adopt the event on their home soil? First of all, that opens a whole new door for culturally-influenced bloodshed, as beers and bratwursts are traded for guns an ammunition, but we also get to experience the early workings of a Purge environment.
In The Purge, Ethan Hawke’s character has already made a name for himself by selling security services to richer members of society who want to keep themselves safe once a year. We never know how trial runs of the event went, or how the first few Purges fared, only understanding that government officials love the statistical factors about downgraded murders and thriving markets. Maybe the first Purge was an epic disaster, with a bunch of confused people wandering the streets, not knowing if the “no laws” mentality truly can be real. Then someone takes the first shot, the first casualty is recorded, and all out chaos breaks loose.
Families run in hiding, trying to protect their children, thugs take to the streets to rule the night, and regulators watch like hawks to contain purging inside their country – because what’s stopping the violence from spreading? Unlike America, many European countries have borders on all sides, not two oceans, and two borders. Looking at Germany itself, other countries in direct contact include Belgium, Netherlands, France, Switzerland, Poland, Austria, and the Czech Republic? Who’s to say Germany can contain their purging, preventing it from spilling over into other areas separated by a fence or wall?
Oh, and then there’s the thought of American officials being flown over to advise another country on proper Purge techniques, so that opens up a whole other story about re-inventing The Purge for another locale. Maybe American big-wigs get caught in an international Purge and see the folly of their ways? Or, maybe they find themselves being slaughtered one by one, getting exactly what’s coming to them…
