After Nick Fury ‘died’ in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, the former head of S.H.I.E.L.D. visits his own grave stone during a meeting with Cap and the Falcon, discussing what the future holds for them all. While there, audiences are given a brief glimpse of the tombstone’s inscription, which reads “The path of the righteous man…”
Fans of Samuel L. Jackson immediately noted that this famous bible passage just so happens to be quoted by his character Jules Winnfield in Pulp Fiction. While many simply interpreted this as a nod to Jackson’s iconic role, the theory claims that this specific scripture is evidence that Winnfield and Fury are one and the same. For instance, that passage doesn’t even appear in the bible in real life…
In Pulp Fiction, Winnfield says that he wants to be the Shepherd, so he takes on a new name and joins S.H.I.E.L.D., working his way up through the ranks until he eventually becomes the organization’s director. While this may seem somewhat tenuous, remember that each of Tarantino’s films are all linked in some capacity, sharing an alternate history where the Inglourious Basterds killed Hitler during the Second World War. Why else would Captain America be so focused on Hydra in 1945 if Adolph hadn’t already been taken care of?
Crazy or not, this theory is certainly a lot of fun.
