7) Grummgar
One of the most vile creatures in Maz’s Castle, Grummgar could easily be the primary antagonist of his own 1950s monster movie. He’s a Dowutin, a species known for their hunting skills, and after being abandoned at a young age, Grummgar started working as a mercenary for hire. These days, he frequently travels to unexplored planets to find new predators to hunt, and he often visits Maz’s Castle in order to receive tips.
In “Bait,” a short story by Alan Dean Foster, Grummgar is hired to bring back the pelt of a molsume, a creature native to the Mid Rim planet of Ithor. He encounters a human big game hunter named Nysorly, who he tries to use as bait before the two form something of a strange friendship, or at least a mutual respect for one another. By the time we encounter him in The Force Awakens, he’s hanging out with the mysterious mercenary Bazine Netal. Apparently, Grummgar thinks Bazine is actually attracted to him, while in reality, she has an alternative agenda. Poor guy.
It’s unclear whether Grummgar survived the First Order attack, but an incredibly terrifying creature who looks like he could take on The Thing and The Hulk in a fight probably did just fine for himself.
