3) Their Powers Are Completely Different
Moreover, the way the abilities of the Rangers work is completely different from the old show, which demonstrates an unexpected reshuffle of the rules of the franchise from the ground up.
As anyone who has watched the series knows, when the Rangers are called into action they have to power up – which apparently involves turning to the camera, shouting the name of their respective dinosaur mascots and suddenly appearing in full costume. As such, they are regular teens until they put on their Power Rangers outfits. Their Power Coins are also key to their transformation, with the power of the Rangers and the Zords being held within.
[zergpaid]In the film, the Power Coins are still the source of their power but it seems that the Coins imbue them with their abilities permanently – which leads to several Spider-Man-like scenes of the gang accidentally using their newfound powers at school. This sort of thing was never to be found in the Mighty Morphin series, though there is some precedent for it in the later Power Rangers: Dino Thunder.
Because of this, we imagine the suits will only function as armour, rather than the core of their power. Again, this is another example of the film putting its characters ahead of the more merchandisable aspects of the franchise.
