9 Superhero Films That Are Incredibly Boring

You know, it's far easier to forgive a bad film than a boring one. Take a creative risk, fail spectacularly, but never settle for the mundane - especially when it comes to superhero films. With such a collection of colorful, bold characters and unique settings, it's almost a crime to produce a bland superpower-inspired affair. Sadly, we've experienced more than our fair share of zero-energy efforts and we're likely to encounter a few more in the years ahead. We're not saying that every film needs to be Citizen Kane, but at least inject some enthusiasm and fun into the damn thing. After all, do you really want to watch a superhero movie that puts you to sleep faster than a Tobey Maguire monologue? Being your favorite pop-culture website in the whole wide world, we've put together a cautionary list of the most boring superhero films to date. Obviously, you're welcome to agree or disagree with our choices and have your own opinion. In fact, if you enjoyed any or all of these films, more power to you. With that out of the way, put on your ugliest Christmas sweater, turn up that Bryan Adams playlist, and join us as we look at the dullest superhero films on the planet. Be warned: we're taking no prisoners here. Fantastic Four Let's start with an easy target: Josh Trank's Sucktastic Four. Not only was this one of the worst films ever made (we can actually see Kate Mara's wig change across the different scenes, for heaven's sake), but it also had us chewing our own wrists due to its sheer triteness. Never has a superhero origin story been as dreary as this piece of trash. Now, forget about the non-existent plot and laugh-out-loud dialogue for a second and let's discuss the action sequences. Wait, what? You also can't remember any impressive action scenes that maximize the Fantastic Four's superpowers? That's because even when this film tried to venture into the sci-fi it came out looking like something from The CW. It's like someone decided to parody The Asylum. Fantastic Four has absolutely no redeeming qualities. Not a single one. We can't even file it in the it's-so-bad-it's-good category, because it bored us to tears. It's not just the worst superhero film, but arguably the most boring as well. Elektra Can you remember what 2005's Elektra was about? We can't, either. Forgetting the fact that this film was a spinoff of 2003's critically mauled Daredevil, we can all agree that Jennifer Garner's Elektra was one of the shining lights of that movie. Whether we actually wanted to see her reprise the role again is a story for another time, though. Surprisingly, the filmmakers included the likes of Typhoid Mary, The Hand, Stick and other Marvel characters in this disaster. Considering Elektra had just over half the budget of Daredevil, it still brought together a wider and more impressive array of characters from the mythos. Unfortunately, though, it did absolutely nothing with them. The fight scenes were amateurish, as was the overall pacing of this snore-fest. If you were unfortunate enough to watch this at the theater, you probably remember looking at your watch and wondering when it would all be over. Suffice to say, Elektra gets two yawns out of ten from us. The Spirit Long before Gabriel Macht became Harvey Specter on Suits, he starred as Denny Colt in Frank Miller's The Spirit. What should've become the spiritual (ha-ha) successor to Sin City though became a blotch on the comic book movie medium and a red cross next to Miller's name. It might've looked pretty in places, but there was nothing else happening around it. While the noir genre can be a slow burn in general, The Spirit failed to ignite at all. The action was fairly limited and the production quickly generated into nothing more than a high-budget student film of aimless shot after aimless shot. Perhaps it was Miller's inexperience as a director that ultimately failed this project, but one cannot ignore the lifelessness of it. To make matters even worse, The Spirit was released on Christmas Day in 2008, almost as if it were a gift for us. Honestly, we would've preferred receiving dad socks instead. Hulk The worst thing is that Ang Lee's Hulk isn't a bad movie in principle; it's just dreadfully unexciting. Looking back at it now, the pairing of Lee and the big, green monster was strange to begin with. Fans wanted a movie where the Hulk smashed everything in sight, while Lee wanted to create a more artsy and layered narrative. You can't blame the cast for this lackluster product, either, since everyone played their part - Eric Bana was terrific as Bruce Banner as was Sam Elliott as General Thunderbolt Ross. However, they never got the opportunity to "star" in a superhero film, as this became a drawn-out family drama. Maybe the MCU has nailed the right formula here: by keeping the Green Goliath part of the Avengers but never exploring a full-blown solo arc purely about him. So far, it's worked well and no one has asked for another Hulk movie - and we doubt anyone will for the foreseeable future. Witchblade Look, Witchblade was never going to be a high-budget cinematic tentpole. In fact, this made-for-TV film was created solely as a teaser for the live-action TV series which was to follow it. Astonishingly, Oliver Stone was actually supposed to head up the series before Hollywood drama set in and he swiftly departed it. He probably blew a sigh of relief when he saw this movie, too. Even if Witchblade was meant to act as a precursor to the series, it could've at least tried to do something memorable with the film. Instead, it deviated from the source material, threw in some familiar TV tropes, and left us with zero expectation for any follow-ups. Regrettably, Yancy Butler also brought her C-grade acting talent to a property that deserved at least a B-grade performance. The TV series didn't last too long, either, ending after only two seasons, so it's fair to say the only people this two-hour trailer fooled were the producers. If you were an avid reader of Marc Silverstri's Witchblade series, this film was definitely a monumental, tedious letdown that you'd rather forget. The Phantom It hurts us to write anything bad about Billy Zane because he's Billy Zane, but 1996's The Phantom had about as much thrill and excitement as a moldy loaf of bread. It looked good - especially Zane as Kit Walker/The Phantom - but that's where the accolades unfortunately end. While the film has become a cult classic since its release, it's more for nostalgia than anything else. There were two or three decent action-packed scenes, but they were stuffed between a lot of air and white noise. Even matchsticks couldn't keep our eyes open long enough between these far and few high points. Considering the decorated history of the character, it's a surprise that The Phantom hasn't been rebooted yet. If the inevitable does finally happen, however, we hope the new filmmakers make a more electrifying film, at the very least. Do it for Billy Zane, guys and girls! RoboCop 3 When you think of RoboCop, you remember the outrageous violence and witty social commentary of the first two films. This is why RoboCop 3 doesn't make any sense as it completely forgets what it's supposed to be. Likewise, it didn't help that the lead star, Peter Weller, was replaced by Robert John Burke, which proved to be a giant mistake. The main reason this movie fails, though, is because it changed the formula to appeal to the wider audience. In 1987's RoboCop, the titular hero was shooting bad guys in the taint, while in the third outing the violence evaporated into the PG-13 realm. This franchise was never intended for kids, but the money spoke louder than logic in this instance. As much as it pains us to admit, watching an Adam Sandler film would've been a far more pleasant task than seeing this limping effort. When you talk about how the mighty have fallen, this is a prime example. But hey, at least the 2014 reboot was a relative return to form, right? Condorman Do you remember 1981's Condorman? Chances are pretty high that your answer is no. Pandering to fans of Hawkman - without the actual DC superhero, of course - this film is a reminder of how Disney used to make some real snoozers back in the day. Crazy to imagine that now, isn't it? Putting aside the fact that Condorman soared about as high as a chicken, the story put you to sleep almost as soon as it began. Nothing about this action-comedy is even remotely entertaining - not even Michael Crawford's ridiculous outfit that made him look more like a turkey than a condor. Looking back, this is definitely one flick that can stay dead and buried in Disney's magical vault. There are better ways to spend your time, like staring at a wall for 90 minutes, or doing laundry. Supergirl Capitalizing on the success of Richard Donner's Superman, the Man of Steel's famous cousin was given her own cinematic adventure as well. Starring Helen Slater, Faye Dunaway and Peter O'Toole, Supergirl had all the ingredients to become a massive success. Alas, the Girl of Steel's first live-action outing turned out to be more like Superbore. Clocking in at two hours, this movie outstayed its welcome by about 119 minutes. The intro was the only thing to raise an eyebrow over, as we watched a disinterested group of actors go through the motions for a paycheck. After seeing this fiasco, it's no wonder why the late Christopher Reeve bowed out of making a cameo. Painful, tedious, and pointless, it's next to impossible to sit through this atrocity without the aid of alcohol. While the Supergirl TV series might prove to be divisive at the best of times, it's miles better than the film. At least there's some action and interesting characters to keep you entertained. And that sounds like time better spent than with Slater's Superbore.
