Cinedigm and Bloody Disgusting continue to grow Screambox’s catalog of the gnarliest and most terrifying horror films, acquiring the streaming rights to Japanese body horror film New Religion, which made its North American premiere at Slamdance Film Festival last month.
From the mind of writer/director Keishi Kondo, New Religion stars Daiki Nunami, Satoshi Oka, and Saionji Ryuseigun. Fans of the cult Japanese horror video game series Fatal Frame may get a kick out of the premise of the upcoming flick, which uses a camera as a means of communicating with spirits on the other side, albeit arguably in a much more confronting and sinister way.
Recently divorced after the death of her only daughter, Miyabi begins working as a call girl. She begins obliging a weird client’s requests to photograph her various body parts, when she slowly starts coming to a realization that with every photograph taken, her daughter’s spirit is edging closer and closer.
At Slamdance, New Religion landed itself a nomination for best narrative feature. It will be coming to Screambox later this year, labeled as an original for the horror streaming service, via Variety.
The Screambox catalog only continues to grow since its acquisition by Cinedigm back in 2021. One such addition was Terrifier 2, which grew the platform’s audience substantially after its critical and commercial success.
