A pair of high-profile DCU rejects shoot their shot for another chance under the new regime

There's always a chance James Gunn could look to the scrapheap for inspiration.

It sounds insane to think about it, but the old DC regime announced and canceled more projects than they actually ended up making, with James Gunn and Peter Safran now tasked to sift through the wreckage and try and right a ship that’s been on a shaky peg for what feels like forever.

While the initial slate of projects for Chapter 1 – Gods & Monsters has been announced, there’s still plenty more to come, with a couple of high-profile casualties of the former franchise’s love of sending the majority of its in-development titles to the ether of eternal purgatory shooting their shot at a chance for redemption.

In an interview with ScreenRant, M3GAN director Gerard Johnstone outlined how he’d love to finally take a crack at Justice League Dark, which has been resurrected and then killed off a fitting number of times for such a supernatural offering.

“It was just a tough time for DC…I was told that they don’t want to spend money on another new movie with a bunch of characters no one’s heard of, and I understand that. It was a shame. But I really was just halfway through the script writing process with that one.

So Deadman, Swamp Thing, Constantine, Zatanna. I felt like Zatanna was actually the main character, and there was a lot of the conversations and jostling I had with the guys, because they were like, “Constantine’s the main character.” I was like, “No, Constantine’s kind of the coolest character. But Zatanna is really the main character.” Because she’s discovering her magical powers for the first time. But it was fun, man. The characters all went to hell to get Zatanna’s dad. I would love to sit down with James Gunn and talk about it, for sure.”

Meanwhile, Renfield‘s Chris McKay was opining to SFX magazine about Nightwing, which he’d been attached to for years prior to the most recent overhaul. It may not be officially axed, but it’s hardly alive and kicking, either.

“Look, I am still hoping to do something with it. Now that James Gunn is involved… I haven’t had any conversations with him or anybody over there, but I love that character. I hope I can do something with him. That would be amazing.”

Fans would love to see both Justice League Dark and Nightwing, that much we can say with some degree of certainty, but anything beyond the realms of wishful thinking is entirely up to the people in charge, so we’ll just have to wait and see.
