Today sees the release of a brand new trailer for Stuart Beattie’s I, Frankenstein. Giving us our first real look at the film, the roughly 2 and a half minute long preview sees our hero Adam, portrayed here by Aaron Eckhart, fighting off supernatural creatures who threaten to take over the human world.
Based on the graphic novel by Kevin Grevioux, the film reminds me a lot of Underworld, which isn’t much of a surprise seeing as Grevioux starred in and produced three of the films in that series. Everything from the visuals, to the action, to the style just screams Underworld clone and that’s something that I simply cannot get over after watching this trailer. It’s not that those movies were awful, because they weren’t, I just can’t find anything new or novel about Beattie’s upcoming flick that makes it worth seeing. At least not from this trailer.

With movie monsters coming to the forefront in Hollywood again (Godzilla, Dracula Untold), I, Frankenstein will certainly have some competition. Unfortunately, I think the film is going to fall short. Admittedly, some of the creature design looks cool and I’m sure that the action will be entertaining, if not completely mindless, but I just have no interest in seeing another film where a supernatural being has to save the world from a bunch of hellbent creatures who are intent on taking over.
Plus, the film also has a January release date, which is never a good sign. It may do well simply because that month is usually pretty dead for the box office, but I can’t see this one earning much praise from critics, or moviegoers.
