It was around this time last year that I was taking a trip to a local cinema to see the appallingly bad Grown Ups 2. Why? Because I’m a glutton for punishment and will give anything a chance, even Adam Sandler movies. While watching the film though, it had become more apparent than ever that his latest comedy vehicles were devoid of any artistic integrity whatsoever, and solely just existed as a way for him and his friends to cash a paycheck while hanging out together.
The saddest part of all this is that year after year audiences continue to flock to his movies. Grown Ups 2 even defeated the Japanese inspired monster bash Pacific Rim on opening weekend at the box office, which legitimately crushed most of whatever hope for mankind I had left. Seriously, one of these movies was a project that a plethora of filmmakers were passionate about bringing to life, while the other was nothing more than a group of friends getting together and shooting a bunch of nonsensical – and at times disgusting and offensive – trash just because they probably have to pay some bills.
This week sees the release of Sandler’s latest get-together, Blended, a comedy about families, rhinos having sex, Terry Crews dancing, and who knows what else. It’s a pretty horrible movie and we suggest that you star very far away from it.
In a recent interview with Jimmy Kimmel (which you can see below), the talk show host questioned the actor about the integrity of his films, and Sandler admitted that they are nothing more than paid vacations (which is kind of what everyone’s been thinking).
Fortunately, Sandler does have some real acting roles on the horizon in both the independent and blockbuster scene. He will be starring in The Cobbler, Men Women & Children and Pixels. With any luck, maybe we’ll get the Adam Sandler back that was once deserving of a Best Actor nomination for Punch Drunk Love. I wouldn’t hold my breath though.
