There are few guarantees in life, but anything hailing from Adam Sandler’s Happy Madison production company becoming an immediate smash hit on Netflix is definitely among them, which is already looking as though it’ll be the sole saving grace of The Out-Laws.
While the omnipotent actor and producer’s outfit have regularly been churning out feature films since the turn of the millennium, it’s very much been a case of quantity over quality. Director Tyler Spindel’s action comedy marks Happy Madison’s 48th feature film release, and do you know how many of them have been Certified Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes? The answer is one.
Funnily enough, that came with last year’s fantastic dramedy Hustle that found Sandler placing his usual shtick on the back burner in favor of doing some real acting for a change, which worked a treat. He may only be a producer on The Out-Laws, but if the early reviews are any indication, it’s a Happy Madison vehicle through and through for better or worse.
To be fair, there have been dozens of worse titles to roll off the Happy Madison hit factory than The Out-Laws, which does have a few entertaining moments in amongst Adam DeVine’s incessant screaming; with Pierce Brosnan’s scenery-inhaling turn comfortably the highlight.
At the end of the day, though, it’s beginning to look as if it’ll tick all of the expected boxes by taking a critical pounding, inevitably topping the Netflix charts, and then being forgotten about in an instant, so at least it’s on course to maintain the brand’s consistent inconsistency.
