After epic ‘The Flash’ trailer, fans want Sasha Calle as James Gunn’s Supergirl post-DCU reset

With Calle already winning hearts, there is no need to waste time looking for a new face for DCU's Kryptonian warrior.

Set to officially debut in a matter of months, The Flash sent hearts overdrive with its recently released full-fledged trailer. But even though it had Michael Keaton returning as Batman and two Barry Allen’s running around trying to save the world, it’s actually the glimpse of Sasha Calle as Supergirl that’s stealing the major chunk of the attention the film has been getting.

As Flash seems beaten in one scene with Batman holding up his hands in surrender as there are rifles pointed at his face, the super sprinter asks, “What do we do?” In his scruffy voice, the Dark Knight nonchalantly answers, “We try not to die.” What sounds like the beginning of a cliched monologue soon becomes something else as the shot pans out and we get our first look at Calle as DCU’s latest iteration of Supergirl.

Calle has joined a fairly long list of actresses who have played the live-action adaptation of the Kryptonian superhero that includes Laura Vandervoot, Melissa Benoist, Helen Slater, Nicholle Tom, Summer Glau, and Malina Weissman. As many know, James Gunn has announced the film Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow as part of the upcoming DCU reboot but does that mean there is space for Sasha Calle in the new universe?

Hopes of Snyderverse getting a chance to live in the DCU are fast receding and some are afraid that it might include Calle as she is, till now, an extension of Zack Snyder’s version of the DC cinematic universe. But Gunn is not aiming for a full reboot and is retaining a few stars from prior DCU films. And there are fans of Calle who would like to see her stay on as Supergirl while the franchise moves forward.

The Redditor’s “hot take” got many supporters seconding the opinion. With storylines that could go on forever and explore alternate directions, Calle playing the role of Supergirl could offer a sense of continuity as different universes are explored.

There appears to be a slight problem with this casting though as Supergirl is supposed to be a teenager when she arrives on Earth.

Of course, the obvious age discrepancy is not the only glaring issue with the differences between the comic book version and the DCU adaptation of the character.

Even though Calle’s DCU future doesn’t have an official stamp yet, fans are sure James Gunn won’t be saying no to her return.

But in the end, it all boils down to whether she will be able to do justice to the role. Honest fans who don’t get wrapped up in too many petty details that remain stuck on if she looks like her comic book counterpart or not. If the Joker can go through so many different looks from Jack Nicholson’s version to Jared Leto’s, why can’t Supergirl simply get her hair dyed?

There is no denying that Sasha Calle looks awesome as Supergirl in The Flash but who knows what will happen by the time 2027 rolls in? But it is clear that the fans know what they want.

The Flash hits theaters this June 16.
