With films like Cinderella Man, Rocky and Raging Bull, we know that if boxing films are done well, they can turn out very very good. With David O. Russell’s The Fighter just around the corner, and gathering some serious Oscar buzz, it’s no secret that boxing films may be the next best thing. The latest boxing film news is about a film about Panamanian boxer Roberto Duran and his ‘No Mas’ boxing match against Sugar Ray Leonard.
The film would be directed, written and produced by Jonathan Jakubowicz and Pacino is currently eyeing the role of Duran’s trainer, Ray Arcel while Bernal is all but set for the role of Duran. Producer Ben Silverman has said that:
“This is a big opportunity. The Latin American population over-indexes in terms of sports and boxing. There’s a lot of momentum around the script that Jonathan wrote.”
The film sounds interesting and with those two actors attached, it could turn out pretty nicely. While I’m not a big boxing fan in general, I’ll be keeping my eye on this one. For those unfamiliar with the fight, check out this video below.
