Alex Proyas, director of such cult favourites like The Crow and Dark City, is now in talks to co-write and direct the swords-and-sandals epic Gods of Egypt for Summit Entertainment.

Gods of Egypt is “set against the legendary world of great pyramids and sphinxes, and follows a common thief and a god on a magical quest.” All of Proyas’ earlier efforts (which also include I, Robot and Knowing) have been dark, grim and gritty, features so it will be quite interesting to see what he does visually with a setting known for its brightness and colourful palate.

Proyas recently had two projects canned. The first was Paradise Lost which was to star Bradley Cooper and the second was Dracula: Year Zero with writers Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless. Proyas will rejoin with the duo for God of Egypt while tossing in his own words as well.

The director is also attached to write and direct The Unpleasant Profession of Jonathan Hoag which is about a man who suffers memory loss during the day and hires detectives to follow him – with frightening revelations.

If he goes ahead and signs on to Gods of Egypt, it is unclear which film we will go first.
