Ever since the first photo of Alexander Skarsgård and his washboard abs hit the web, there was no doubting that the Swede looked the part as Warner Bros.’ all-new King of the Apes. And now, with exactly one month until the film’s theatrical bow in North America, the IMAX poster for The Legend of Tarzan drives that point home and then some.
Stylized in a similar vein to last week’s moody one-sheet, which featured both Skarsgård’s musclebound hero and Margot Robbie’s Jane Porter deep within the Congo jungle, the poster below finds Skarsgård standing shoulder to shoulder with his primitive ancestors.
Upon returning to his rightful home, Tarzan and his glowering allies will be uniting against Christoph Waltz’s scheming Belgian, Captain Leon Rom, who wants nothing more than to exploit the Congo forest for corporate interests. Also on board for that adventure are Djimon Hounsou as Chief Mbonga and Samuel L. Jackson as George Washington Williams.
Sporting a heavy amount of CGI, it’ll be interesting to see how audiences take to Warner’s rebooted The Legend of Tarzan, particularly as it’s arriving so soon after The Jungle Book. Can it emulate the success of Jon Favreau’s heartfelt family tale? Or will it go down as one of the causalities of 2016’s cinematic calendar?
The Legend of Tarzan is due to land in the thick of summer blockbuster season on July 1 and July 8 in the States and the United Kingdom, respectively.
It has been years since the man once known as Tarzan (Skarsgård) left the jungles of Africa behind for a gentrified life as John Clayton III, Lord Greystoke, with his beloved wife, Jane (Robbie) at his side. Now, he has been invited back to the Congo to serve as a trade emissary of Parliament, unaware that he is a pawn in a deadly convergence of greed and revenge, masterminded by the Belgian, Captain Leon Rom (Waltz). But those behind the murderous plot have no idea what they are about to unleash.
