Even at 54 years young, Tom Cruise continues to stray far beyond his comfort zone in the search for new and exciting roles, and there is perhaps no better example of that admirable pursuit in motion than the wild first trailer for American Made.
Heralding a reunion between Cruise and his Edge of Tomorrow director Doug Liman – incidentally, the creative duo is poised to take the fight to the Mimics once more thanks to upcoming sequel Live Die Repeat and Repeat – American Made tells the extraordinary true story of Barry Seal, a whip-smart hustler and pilot who is drafted into the CIA in order to spearhead one of the biggest and most daring covert operations in U.S. history. So far, so Cruise.
But Barry Seal is a far cry from the straight-laced Jack Reacher, not to mention Ethan Hunt of the Mission: Impossible series, and up above you’ll get a glimpse of Tom Cruise’s larger-than-life protagonist indulge in a criminal underworld of guns, drugs and money laundering. Also starring Domhnall Gleeson (Star Wars: The Last Jedi), Sarah Wright, E. Roger Mitchell, Jesse Plemons, Lola Kirke, Alejandro Edda, Benito Martinez, Caleb Landry Jones and Jayma Mays, the official description reads as so:
In Universal Pictures’ American Made, Tom Cruise reunites with his Edge of Tomorrow director, Doug Liman (The Bourne Identity, Mr. and Mrs. Smith), in this international escapade based on the outrageous (and real) exploits of a hustler and pilot unexpectedly recruited by the CIA to run one of the biggest covert operations in U.S. history.
American Made will deploy into theaters on September 29th of this year. Elsewhere on the Tom Cruise news cycle, next week sees the launch of The Mummy and with it Universal’s wildly ambitious Dark Universe franchise, while we learned earlier this morning that the long-rumored Top Gun sequel will take flight as Top Gun: Maverick. Filming on that one is expected to commence early next year.
