Soon enough Andrew Garfield will be swinging back into action for The Amazing Spider-Man 2, and although Mary Jane has been cast and a villain is rumored, not a lot has been said about what will happen to Spidey specifically in the 2014 sequel.
E! News talked to Garfield and was able to get a bit of information about the direction the film will head. From the hints he dropped it seems that Marc Webb will continue to focus on how Peter’s past affects his web-slinging and the rest of his life.
“I feel really excited. I feel like we got over a hump with our first one. We had to reinstate the character, and we had to reinvigorate an audience to the character. And I hope to bring more of this theme—the theme of the orphan. I wanna keep exploring that theme of being fatherless, being motherless, searching for purpose and finding a purpose within himself, being a self-made man, I guess. It is a responsibility to play that role, and I don’t take it lightly. I think there’s so much to explore with that mythology and within the tension between living a double life, struggling with being good, struggling with choosing good behavior over bad behavior, with the pressures of a city on your shoulders.”
Spider-Man, as is true with many superheroes, is a very psychological character. The toll his crime-fighting takes on his life, combined with just how hard his life was before being bit, has to serve a major role in any portrayal of your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man.
In the first film, Webb did a great job at balancing the incredible action of swinging across New York with the life of a teenage orphan who still doesn’t know what happened to his parents. It appears the second film will continue along that same road.
Some may read that ending line about choosing good behavior over bad behavior as a hint at a symbiote-fueled Spidey reappearing in this trilogy. Garfield declined to comment on rumors regarding the villain for the next film, but he did say a new suit was coming, though not necessarily of the black variety.
“The suit is undergoing a redesign because I couldn’t urinate in it last time. So I’m less nervous ’cause that’s gonna be nice.”
