Andy Samberg, famous for his role in the comedy police-procedural comedy Brooklyn Nine-Nine, has been cast in an undisclosed role in the upcoming animated film, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is yet to reveal its whole cast slate, given there are so many iterations of the web crawler appearing in the movie. Comprising more than two-hundred major and minor characters uniquely designed for the film, several versions of the web crawler will appear in the cross-dimensional mission that Miguel O’Hara/Spider-Man 2099 signs Miles up for.
Samberg is the latest in the long list of A-list actors set to appear in the movie. Samberg’s involvement was confirmed on the official Instagram page of the comedy group, The Lonely Island. The Lonely Island is a trio of comedians who comprises Akiva Schaffer, Andy Samberg, and Jorma Taccone. The three have collaborated on numerous writing projects, including songs and sketches, most prominently on the episodes of Saturday Night Live. The official Instagram page of the group posted the film’s poster as a story and captioned it: “Jorma and Andy are “in” this” – emphasizing the quoted ‘in’. Interestingly, Jorma Taccone has long been confirmed as a cast member. He plays the famous Spider-Man antagonist, Vulture, aka Adrian Toomes. The Lonely Island has an additional reason to celebrate with Andy joining the cast.
Andy Samberg seems like a perfect fit for an iteration of Spider-Man for Across the Spider-Verse. A renowned comedic artist, he is famous for his role in Brooklyn Nine-Nine, as well as his Golden Globe-nominated performance in Palm Springs (notably produced by The Lonely Island trio).
Samberg isn’t also new to voice acting and performances. He started his film career with prominent voice acting roles in Space Chimps, Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs, and most famously in Hotel Transylvania. And he currently stars, writes, and produces an animated sitcom, Digman.
Samberg’s role is currently unknown. Maybe that emphasized ‘in’ could mean something more. He could be voicing an important character. Or maybe he just features in the likeness of a character passing by. If it’s just a brief voice cameo, wouldn’t it be interesting to make his character a policeman? That would bring his career-defining stint on Brooklyn Nine-Nine full circle. Such a cameo would be similar to that of Donald Glover’s Troy Barnes’ in the previous film, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.
Whatever the role may be, Samberg has joined an incredible voice cast that, hopefully, will bring him to a role of higher prominence and value.
Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse releases June 2, 2023.
