We seem to have been talking about The Beguiled for some time now, but another casting announcement brings hope that we are finally getting closer to production. The film marks a return to feature filmmaking for Academy Award winner Sofia Coppola, and the latest news indicates that Angourie Rice (The Nice Guys) has now joined the cast.
Coppola’s The Beguiled is the second screen adaptation of the Thomas Cullinan novel of the same name, following the 1971 film version that was directed by Don Siegel and starred Clint Eastwood. It’s a Civil War era tale that sees a seriously injured Union soldier find sanctuary in an isolated Southern girl’s academy. As he receives first aid, care and attention, he finds that the loneliness of the women and girls creates a maelstrom of lust and jealousy.
The addition of Angourie Rice expands an already notable cast – which includes Nicole Kidman, Elle Fanning, and Kirsten Dunst. Colin Farrell also stars in the role of the wounded soldier, made famous by Clint Eastwood in the previous film version. It’s this mixture of performers – all bringing very different perspectives to the piece – that makes The Beguiled such an intriguing prospect. On its current production schedule, however, we will have to wait until later in 2017 to see the finished product. We’ll certainly be eagerly awaiting its arrival, though, and will be sure to keep you posted as further updates roll in.
