It’s not often that a film gets described as “Godzilla meets Lost in Tranlsation,” but that’s exactly what people are calling Colossal, a mysterious project from Timercrimes writer-director Nacho Vigalondo. Ahead of its launch to foreign buyers at the Cannes Film Festival, the pic has tapped Interstellar actress Anne Hathaway to topline, which, coupled with the intriguing plot, should make Colossal the subject of a significant bidding war at the festival.
The Voltage Pictures production will find Hathaway taking on the role of Gloria, an ordinary woman whose marriage and career collapse in quick succession, leading her to leave New York City for her more welcoming hometown. When a giant lizard starts destroying Tokyo and news of the attack reaches her, however, Gloria realizes that she has an inexplicable mental connection to the carnage. In order to end the destruction, she must learn why the power of her seemingly unimportant mind has provided her the ability to change the fate of the world.
That’s one heck of a setup, and with Vigalondo scribing and sitting behind the camera, there’s absolutely no doubt that Colossal is going to be something really special. His Timecrimes was one of the more innovative time-travel thrillers in recent years, and his recent directorial choices have been nothing if not bold, from the ambitious techno-thriller Open Windows to a thoroughly twisted (and amazing) segment for V/H/S Viral.
With a star like Hathaway, an increased budget and a story that seems unlike any we’ve seen play out on the big screen, there’s no telling what Vigalondo will be able to come up with – and that’s precisely what’s so exciting about Colossal.
The director noted his excitement about the actress’ involvement, stating, “Colossal is my most ambitious script so far, and probably also the most personal one. Having Anne and this terrific team around goes beyond my craziest expectations.”
Nicolas Chartier, CEO of Voltage, added that:
As huge fans of Timecrimes, we are thrilled to be collaborating with a filmmaker as talented as Nacho. He has written an extraordinarily unique piece of material and we look forward to seeing Anne in such a challenging role.
No other cast members have been announced for Colossal, but that news will be here on We Got This Covered as soon as it breaks.
