Old dog, new tricks. For Warner Bros.’ upcoming comedy The Intern, Oscar winners Anne Hathaway and Robert De Niro will strike up an unlikely friendship that soon extends beyond the four walls of the office.
Stepping into the dusty shoes of Ben Whittaker is De Niro, a 70-year-old retired widower who struggles to fill his remaining years with the usual activities. Forget yoga, cooking or Mandarin classes, our protagonist soon discovers that the only way he can feel satisfied in retirement is by forgetting seclusion altogether and returning to work.
And so, Whittaker is drafted in as the (senior) intern at an online fashion site, one built from the ground up by Anne Hathaway’s CEO, Jules Ostin. Struggling to keep pace with the blisteringly fast pace of the industry, Jules begins to look to her new recruit for life advice, and it’s here where both characters begin to form a friendship that is refreshingly honest and – whisper it – sweet.
With an Academy award-winning duo at its core, it’s easy to forgive The Intern‘s clichéd genre sensibilities. Moreover, with Nancy Meyers at the helm, there’s certainly reason to be hopeful for the final product. Rene Russo, Anders Holm, Andrew Rannells, Adam Devine, Celia Weston, Nat Wolff, Linda Lavin and Zack Perlman complete the cast list.
Robert De Niro will bring class and intelligence to the office when Warner Bros.’ The Intern hits theaters on September 25. For now, you can share your early impressions of the comedy down below.
