Originally set to star Robert De Niro and Reese Witherspoon, Nancy Meyer’s The Intern is seeing a casting replacement, with Witherspoon dropping out and Anne Hathaway coming on board to take her place.
The film will find the actress playing “the founder of a fashion-based e-commerce company who agrees to a community outreach program where seniors will intern at the firm.” De Niro will take on the role of the titular intern, who “becomes indispensable at the firm.”
Considering how bland and predictable the premise of this film sounds, I’m actually quite surprised that Warner Bros. was able to draw in talent like Hathaway and De Niro. Then again, you can look at it the other way as well. If these two stars are signing on, perhaps there’s something there. Plus, Meyers has a decent track record when it comes to these types of films (What Women Want, Something’s Gotta Give, It’s Complicated), so who knows? Maybe The Intern will surprise us.
With two stars and a director now set, the film will likely head into production shortly, so expect more updates in the near future. Considering the fact that De Niro and Hathaway are in the lead roles, I suspect that a strong group of supporting actors will be signing on to round out the cast.
Tell us, what do you think of The Intern? Are Hathaway and De Niro in it just for the cheque, or could there be a solid script here? Let us know.
