Whether it’s a ruling patriarch in Meet the Parents or a best friend revisiting his youth in Last Vegas, Hollywood veteran Robert De Niro is no stranger to playing the archetypal old guy in movies. One who doesn’t understand the Internet or the lingo of 2015. All of these tropes and more can be glimpsed in the first trailer for Nancy Meyers’ new comedy, The Intern, but at its core it’s about an unlikely friendship between De Niro and Interstellar star Anne Hathaway.
Stepping into the shoes of one Ben Whittaker, Meyers’ latest will see De Niro play a man fed up with retirement, and so he quickly enrolls in an internship program with a online fashion giant in order to get back into the swing of things. Here, he’ll meet Jules Ostin (Hathaway), a well-established visionary who founded the company herself and is now overseeing its day-to-day operations from the top of the proverbial food chain. So when Whittaker, a 70-year-old widower, shows up to join Ostin’s tight ship, it isn’t long before the two become close. Expect elderly jokes aplenty.
Joining Hathaway and De Niro for this atypical (romantic?) comedy are Anders Holm and Adam Devine, as well as Rene Russo, Andrew Rannells, Celia Weston and Nat Wolff.
The Intern will debut in theaters on September 25.
In “The Intern,” Robert De Niro stars as Ben Whittaker, a 70-year-old widower who has discovered that retirement isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. Seizing an opportunity to get back in the game, he becomes a senior intern at an online fashion site, founded and run by Jules Ostin (Anne Hathaway).
