Marvel Studios will likely be conducting a lengthy postmortem on Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. The movie is currently sitting at a miserable 48 percent on the Tomatometer and is experiencing a huge box office drop-off, leading many to wonder for the first time in years whether all’s well behind the scenes at the studio.
Quantumania‘s problems are manyfold, but would it have been better if they’d included a Ninja Turtle-style giant ant voiced by Werner Herzog?
Yes, yes it would.
This bombshell piece of cut content was casually mentioned by writer Jeff Loveness in an interview with ComicBook when he was asked what didn’t make the theatrical release.
“For very good reason some stuff had to be cut out. I had a big Werner Herzog-voiced ant in like big Ninja Turtle suit prosthetic. That didn’t make it.”
Oh, man! That would have been worth the price of admission alone. For the sake of clarity, we think he means the ant suit was in the style of the 1990s animatronic Turtles suits, rather than an ant actually being dressed like Michelangelo or Raphael. Loveness went on to reveal more:
“Yeah yeah there was definitely more but I mean I think the cut that we have is the cut that people should see of course. But yeah there’s always stuff that gets trimmed down or changed. There was a little more Janet and Kang stuff. More of the flashbacks in the Quantum Realm. More of their time together.
How they fought each other. Kind of what happened in the gulf between. More of her escape. There was more Hope. There was some Hope stuff like her glimpse or her view of the multiverse. More Hope and Scott stuff. There was more of everybody. I think the core storyline shown through and that is kind of the process of making movies. I got cut. I had a beautiful scene that I was blown up by M.O.D.O.K.”
Perhaps one day we’ll get an extended edition that adds some of this stuff back in. Whatever else happens, we really hope we get to hear the esteemed director of Aguirre the Wrath of God and Fitzcarraldo voicing a giant talking ant, because he’d knock it out of the park.
The Disney Plus releases tend to feature deleted scenes, so we’ll wait in hope until that day comes in late spring/early summer.
Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania is now in theaters.
