After the apocalypse-level gloom of Avengers: Infinity War, the subsequent Ant-Man and the Wasp served as a refreshing change of pace for the MCU, with the film embracing smallness in both the scale of its story and the size of its characters. After this relatively low-stakes outing, you could argue that the next logical step would be a Marvel movie focusing on the mundane life of a character who isn’t even a superhero, but you probably shouldn’t hold your breath on that possibility.
In an online Q&A, a fan asked director Peyton Reed if Scott Lang’s friend Luis could ever get his own standalone movie, or at least an MCU recap one shot. Reed’s respective answers were a ‘no’ on the former, and a ‘we kind of already did that’ on the latter.
“We actually shot a Scott/Luis MCU recap that introduced Michelle Pfeiffer to the MCU. It screened exclusively at Comic-Con 2017. Maybe it will see the light of day at some point. As for Luis standalone movie: nope.”
While there probably weren’t many people out there who were sincerely predicting a Luis standalone film as a distinct possibility, it’s still nice to have a little clarification that one of the MCU’s most cherished comedic characters isn’t stepping to the forefront of the franchise quite yet. Either way, he does a fine enough job stealing scenes in other people’s movies.
As it stands, the future of the MCU seems pretty mysterious beyond next year’s Spider-Man: Far From Home, with the prior Avengers 4 set to deliver big changes to the cinematic universe while bringing Marvel’s Phase 3 to a close. Even the two title characters of Ant-Man and the Wasp have no projects confirmed beyond the highly anticipated sequel to Avengers: Infinity War, though it’s clear that both Scott and Hope will be showing up somewhere in the ensemble action flick. As for whether Luis too could have a hand in the fight against Thanos, we’ll find out when Avengers 4 hits theaters on May 3rd, 2019.
