We’ve still got a long way to go before the traumatic conclusion of Avengers: Infinity War is clarified, in whichever form the Powers That Be see fit. However, while the outcome remains in question, and will for some time to come, the stage in which it will play itself out upon is one thing we do know for sure.
Colloquially referred to as Avengers 4, apart from a release date of May 3rd, 2019, and that co-directors Anthony and Joe Russo are behind the camera, not much is known about the fourth Avengers installment just yet. Still, that hasn’t stopped the fandom from speculating.
For instance, with Ant-Man and the Wasp roughly two months out from release – July 6th – many are wondering if the superhero sequel featuring Scott Lang (Paul Rudd) and Hope van Dyne (Evangeline Lily) will give fans their first look at the final Avengers chapter.
Positioned between the events of Captain America: Civil War and Infinity War, how, exactly, Ant-Man and the Wasp will fit into the MCU timeline has been the question on everyone’s mind since it was revealed that Scott Lang would not be appearing in the aforementioned Avengers film. Fortunately, then, we received some clarity on the matter thanks to Stephen McFeely, co-screenwriter of Infinity War.
In an interview with BuzzFeed, McFeely disclosed that although the filmmakers for Ant-Man and the Wasp and Captain Marvel “got to make exactly the movies they wanted,” both pics will be tied to the events of Avengers 4.
“My hope is the conversation you and I will have a year from now, you’ll have a sense of the choices we’ve made over the course of an entire year of Marvel movies. There’s a relationship between them all.”
As MCU films tend to offer some nod to the next chapter via a mid or post-credits sequence, akin to the Avengers: Infinity War post-credits scene teasing Captain Marvel, it’s certainly plausible that Ant-Man and the Wasp could follow suit. For instance, we could see something like Carol Danvers responding to that distress call sent out by Fury at the end of Infinity War. Or, alternatively, the scene could depict Scott Lang running into some of the surviving heroes who weren’t wiped out by Thanos’ snap.
Whatever the Ant-Man and the Wasp post-credits scene ends up giving us, it’s likely that it’ll be somehow tied into Avengers 4. Though at this point, all we can do is speculate as to what Marvel have up their sleeve.
