Aquaman’s phenomenal run in theaters continues, with Arthur Curry’s solo debut now passing the coveted $1 billion mark at the worldwide box office and also topping The Dark Knight to become the eighth highest grossing superhero movie ever.
As it stands, James Wan’s latest effort has pulled in a whopping $1.02 billion globally, putting the film far ahead of Wonder Woman‘s $821.8 million figure and also way in front of the $873.6 million total brought in by Zack Snyder’s Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice. Outside of just the DCEU, the aforementioned Nolan pic has also been left in the dust by Arthur Curry as its total stands at $1 billion. In fact, the only DC movie that still sits above Aquaman is The Dark Knight Rises, which remains at the top of the list with $1.08 billion.
To break down Aquaman’s haul, $732.4 million of it comes from overseas, with the film easily achieving the status of the DCEU’s highest-grossing entry outside of North America, and the other $287.8 million was brought in on home turf. That’s still a ways off from say Wonder Woman ($412.5 million) or even Batman V Superman ($330 million), but the international total for Aquaman is what’s really helping it and has now made it the second biggest DC pic of all-time.
Whether it’ll ultimately topple The Dark Knight Rises remains to be seen, but even if it doesn’t, you can bet that the execs at Warner Bros. are thrilled with the film’s performance. After all, no one could’ve predicted that a movie featuring Arthur Curry as the headlining hero would do this well.
At this rate, the studio will surely be keen to get a sequel into cinemas, but before we learn what’s next for Aquaman, Zachary Levi will get his time to shine when Shazam! hits theaters on April 5th, 2019.
