Alright you primitive screwheads, listen up: You see this? This is an exciting time for fans of catchphrase-laden horror action comedies. Indeed, it’s time to get out your boomstick, come to papa, gimme some sugar baby, etc., and so forth, as more news of Army of Darkness 2 surfaces. Last week we were treated to the fantastic news that Bruce Campbell would be returning to the franchise, and now we’ve learned that the director of the original Army of Darkness, Sam Raimi, will be helming the sequel as well.
The news comes courtesy of Fede Alvarez, the director of the recent not-nearly-as-bad-as-it-could-have-been Evil Dead reboot. When a fan asked Alvarez on Twitter if he would also be directing Army of Darkness 2, Alvarez replied, “Sam Raimi will!”
Groovy.
Of course, any news broken via Twitter should be taken with a grain of salt, especially when Raimi himself has not confirmed the news, nor has the Army of Darkness sequel itself actually been officially announced at this point. Still, Alvarez certainly would know what’s going on with the franchise, and when combined with last week’s confirmation from Bruce Campbell, this whole thing is starting to look like it’s really finally going to happen.
What will be really interesting will be seeing if and how the Evil Dead reboot will play into Army of Darkness 2. Will there be some crossover between the two worlds? Without spoiling anything too much, let’s just say that given a certain cameo after the closing credits in the Evil Dead reboot, it’s entirely likely.
This all adds up to one thing: in a few years from now when you decide to dress up as Ash for Halloween, you’re going to have to choose between young Ash and old, out-of-shape Ash. It’s the same tough choice that Elvis impersonators have had to face all these years. Fitting, given that Bruce Campbell also played an aged Elvis in the cult favorite Bubba Ho-Tep.
Army of Darkness 2 should be coming to theaters sometime in… this decade? Who knows. Hopefully this slow trickle of new information means we’ll get more details on its upcoming production soon.
