Slowly but surely we are getting more information about the Assassin’s Creed film starring Michael Fassbender. A mere few weeks ago we learned that the film had found a distributor in 20th Century Fox. Now an Ubisoft chief sales and marketing officer named Geoffrey Sardinsays tells us that we can expect the Creed film in “the next coming year.”
This tidbit comes to us via Joystiq, who rightly identifies it as one of the vaguest announcements in recent memory. Is Sardin talking about next year as in 2013, or the next coming year as in 2014? Given that work on the screenplay only just began, a 2013 release date seems incredibly unlikely.
The Assassin’s Creed film has been fast-tracked, though, and with star Michael Fassbender in high demand right now they might be wanting to get the film shot and ready for release as quickly as possible. Given Hollywood’s questionable track record with game to film adaptations – and the abject failure of Silent Hill: Revelation at the box office – one would hope that Ubisoft and co-production company New Regency will take their time with this one.
For fans of Assassin’s Creed, though, there are still the games to dwell on. We’ll likely hear more about the film as the screenplay gets done and shooting gets underway. Hopefully the next announcement will be a bit more concrete.
